More Science, More Awareness at Elizabeth College
The program of events at Elizabeth College, for 2019, has been supported by an Inspiring Australia Grant, which will enable Elizabeth College to present events which will serve to inspire and create conversations about Science.
This year we are honoured that Lila Landowski is our first Annual Science Week Patron. Lila was a student at Ogilvie High School, Elizabeth College and the University of Tasmania. She is passionate about education; and student and community engagement in Science.
Dr Lila Landowski is a neuroscientist, science communicator and science advocate. She is the 2015 Premier’s Young Achiever of the Year, a finalist for Young Australian of the Year (Tasmania) in 2016, and an AIPS Young Tall Poppy in 2018. Lila is currently investigating nerve regeneration and stroke. She trained at the Mayo Clinic to cement her status as an emerging leader in the field of peripheral nerve injury. Lila regularly engages with the community through science segments on ABC radio, public talks and in print and digital media. She has taught intro courses at the University of Tasmania for eight years, working across various subjects for Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Medical Research, Biotechnology, Pharmacy and Science students; as well as coordinating units in the Bachelor of Dementia Care.

Each activity is designed for one primary class only and each school is restricted to choosing 3 activities. Some activities have a maximum of 25 students, these are marked as such.

We have been successful in obtaining some funding to assist with transport. Please send in a separate request for this funding with a qualifying statement to ElizabethCollegeScienceWeek@gmail.com for consideration, if this would be required for you to participate.

Our Journeys in Life
Dr Lila Landowski, the Elizabeth College Inaugural Science Week Patron, and Dr Will Bignell, will address students about their journey in Life and Science.
Will Bignell is a farmer and agricultural scientist who has worked across several disciplines ranging from a PhD in enhancing omega-3 in sheep meat, value adding to salmon waste and flying drones commercially. Botanical Art – Microscopes, Leaves and Photography
Be adventurous with Botany and Science, with Dr Tanya Scharaschkin and create a work of art, by sectioning, staining and using microscopy on a variety of botanical sample led by Tanya. Please go to the Elizabeth College website for instructions on how to book tickets for this event.

How neutrons can save the world
Presented by Dr Helen Maynard-Casely, a physicist from ANSTO, who has been awarded the Australian Institute of Physics (AIP) Women in Physics (WiP) lectureship this year.
Abstract: They are small, neutral and often in a spin, and so much more than ‘just’ part of the atom. Neutrons are the sub-atomic particles that are here to save the world. Whatever the challenge facing the world, this trusty particle can be called on to discover the details that no other can fathom. From the shape of a virus and how a drug can disable it, to keeping electrons flowing in the next generation of batteries – neutrons are here to shed light and solve the grand challenges we face today.

Poster Competition “Fly me to Mars”
Open to all Southern Tasmanian schools K – 12. This year’s theme is “Fly me to Mars”. Posters will be displayed at the More Science, More Awareness Mini Conference (12 August). At this event we will have the “Peoples’ Choice” award for which they will be judged on their STEM content. $100 prize money for the winning entry, and an additional $100 for their school. Book prizes will also be awarded. Winners will be announce at the More Science, More Awareness Mini Conference.

Government House Reception
This reception is hosted by the Governor of Tasmania, Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Kate Warner AC, to mark Science Week in Southern Tasmania
The reception provides an opportunity for students from Southern Tasmanian High Schools and Colleges to network and discuss current issues and concerns in the science domain with local professional scientists, professors, current post-graduate students, fellow students and teachers.

Indigenous Film Night (Cancelled)
Join us for a free screening of “Rabbit Proof Fence” in the Elizabeth College Theatre, as we celebrate the International Year of Indigenous Languages. This screening will be preceded by a presentation by a member of the Tasmanian Indigenous community.

Science Week Luncheon
This luncheon is hosted by The Hon Jeremy Rockliff MP Deputy Premier and Minister for Education & Training, and provides an opportunity for young scientists, primary school students and college students to meet and discuss science issues. Dr Lila Landowski, our Inaugural science week patron will be a special guest, as will be Madeline Green, who will talk about her research work on shark populations.
