Attendance at Elizabeth College

Attendance and Why It Matters

In Tasmania, school attendance is compulsory from age 6 up until 18 years old. Parents and carers must ensure children are enrolled and attending school, registered for home education, or involved in an approved learning program (Section 16 Education Act 2026). Regular attendance is essential for every student’s learning, wellbeing, and sense of belonging. When students attend consistently, they keep up with their learning, build strong friendships, and feel connected to our school community. Families can help by:

  • Encouraging daily attendance unless unwell
  • Scheduling appointments outside school hours
  • Maintaining consistent sleep and morning routines
  • Communicating early if challenges arise

Every day of learning counts:

  • Learning builds progressively, and missed lessons are difficult to replace.
  • Even one day away can affect achievement in reading, writing, and numeracy.

Small absences add up:

  • 1 day absent each fortnight = ~4 weeks lost per year
  • 1 day absent per week = ~2 months lost per year
  • Missing 10% of school days increases educational risk

Regular attendance helps students:

  • Achieve academically
  • Build friendships
  • Feel confident and connected
  • Complete school successfully
  • Prepare for further education, training, and work

Schools support parents/ carers by monitoring student attendance and helping to address attendance issues when they emerge. If your young person is experiencing difficulties attending, please contact us—working together is the best way we can partner to support strong attendance.

Reporting an Absence

Ways to report an absence:

Include your child’s name, date(s) of absence, and the reason.
All absences must be explained.

If you receive an automated SMS, this means your young person was absent for a whole lesson. Automated SMSs are sent for every lesson. Please respond with the reason for the absence.

Contacting Teachers About Missed Work

Contacting Teachers About Missed Work
Learning is best done in person with the teacher and peers. In the absence of that, contact can be made with teachers about key learning tasks and information missed, as well as guidance on how to prepare for the next lesson:

  • Through CANVAS
  • Email (via course CANVAS page)
  • Contacting the school office
